Mothers day afternoon tea cancelled COVID 19

Hi
With sadness I cannot go to the planned afternoon tea for mothers day with my mum and daughter.... Gutted as we were all looking forward to it.
So decided to make most of current situation and bring the afternoon tea to my house instead. Yes doing our own afternoon tea at home on mother's day.
I stated to panic about getting the food due to the stock piling taking place in all supermarkets so started to get the stuff on Thursday at M&S. Got some scones, jam and clotted cream, Colin and Connie catapiller mini cakes and some little fruit meringue tarts.

I also picked up millionaires shortbread squares and  filled macaroons.
I think I will make some brownies too.
Then today I managed to get some bread, ham, cheese, eggs plus sausage rolls and quiche.
I may just get a few more bits tomorrow to add to it. Not planning on cooking dinner mothers day so this should fill us all up.

Cirque Du Soleil afternoon tea Royal Garden Hotel Kensington

Saturday 29th February

I saw this deal on afternoontea.co.uk and could not resist booking as 50% off, £19 per person. Too good a deal to miss the chance of adding to my growing list of afternoon teas. Did not take much persuading for my mum to come with me. I think she is pleased that  I have started this blog as she often gets to come with me to try them out. She loves cakes more than me and  I think that is where I get it from. I can remember as a child we used to go camping a lot in the UK and when driving about we always used to look out for bakery shops and would get excited at the thought of buying some cakes. We are definitely a foodie family!!!

Anyway enough of my childhood memories and back to the afternoon tea in question.
It was a modern hotel with the bar and restaurant overlooking the park. There were wall to ceiling windows so it was very light and great to watch the people walking around in the park. We had a little table for two by the window, the chairs were low and comfortable. We was handed the menu and offered glass of water and tea of coffee, we both ordered a cappuccino  which I must say was very nice.

We waited about 20 minutes for the sandwiches to arrive.... When they did we had to refuse them as they had not taken our allergies into account. I had informed them over the phone no fish and my mum no mayonnaise or mustard. They had a record of this also when we arrived on the booking sheet. The waiter apologised and then about 10 minutes later we got the correct ones. As you can see from photo we got a plate full of sandwiches each .....my favourite was the little egg roll on top and the chicken and mayonnaise sandwich.
Whist eating our sandwiches we was offered more coffee and our water glass topped up.

I must say the service was slow even though the restaurant was not that busy but i did not mind as we was not in a rush and it was relaxing just chatting and people watching. Halfway through our tea a man started to play the piano which was in the corner of the room at the back .

When the cake stand arrived the cakes on the top were decorated lovely and with the Cirque Du Soleil theme of bright colours and had tropical flavours. The bottom tier had 4 scones on which were warm and we had a tray of 2 different types of jam and extremely thick clotted cream.
In the middle were 4 different slices of cake including fruit cake and lemon cake. The cakes on top were large enough to cut in half so we got to taste everything !!!! Out of the cakes my favourite was the Mango and almond cream slice whilst my mum preferred the pineapple tart. They were all very tasty. Oh i must mention the lightly fruited scones which were the fluffiest and lightest ones i have probably had so far at a afternoon tea....Delicious.

We was not rushed and after about 2 and half hours we asked for the bill. It was a nice afternoon tea and definitely good value as only half price ....unfortunately this was only up to the end of Feb !!!!!

Nearest Station  : Kensington High street    - Approx 6 minute walk.
Best bits : Fluffy light scones and lovely decorated cakes.
Worst bits : Sandwich with olives in and fact we did not get offered any extra food ,,,not that we really wanted any but just would of been nice to be offered!!!

Value for money :  Yes defo as i only paid half price but at full price still good value as you got quite a lot of food
Would go back?  :  Yes probably

Lanes of London - Marriott Park Lane

Saturday 15th February

Afternoon tea with my hubby for our Valentines treat together. Back in August brought this as a voucher from Buyagift when there was a discount code. So it only cost me £66.99 for bottomless bubbles for 2 instead of £87 which i think is a bargain as was very nice .

The weather was not very good so i was relieved that the hotel was literally just opposite Marble Arch underground station if you come out at exit 2. There was a lovely relaxed feel as we walked in and the table and chairs looked comfortable and nicely laid . There was also a lady playing the harp which was a lovely touch. She was very good too and played many tunes new and old that we recognised.

We was offered Spanish Cava which was nice and  not too dry and handed the menu. The waitress explained the different types of teas on offer by bringing a tray of little pots for us to see and choose from. My husband choosed a tea called Red Dragon and i just ordered a coffee. She also asked if we had any allergies.

We waited about 20 minutes for the stand to arrive which was full of lovely looking sandwiches and yummy cakes. I was so looking forward to tucking into it all as was getting hungry.

The sandwiches had different flavoured bread which made them very tasty. The turkey with mustard mayo in onion bread was really nice and so was the cheese and chutney in walnut bread. Our waitress who was very friendly and attentive (her name was Justine) said that we could have more sandwiches or scones if we wanted. She also offered us more tea or coffee and our glass was constantly being topped up with the cava.  I decided to try the rosebud tea as the waitress had recommended it and after all it seemed appropriate as it was Valentines. 💘💘💘
Next we tucked into the scones as you know by now these are my favourite part of the afternoon tea. We had 2 each one plain and one fruit with a big pot of strawberry and elderflower jam and extremely thick cream.....Yummmmmm. All i will say is that the scones would of been bit nicer if warm. Having said this we did order more scones which arrived still warm so must of just been fresh out of the oven. I only asked for 1 but was brought a plate of 4 . We only managed  another one each !!!!!! Wanted to save room for the cakes.
The cakes looked so nice and we had one of each. I always think this is good as have been to afternoon teas in past where you only get one of each type so have to cut them in half so you can both try them. The chocolate mouse tart was made of dark chocolate so extremely chocolatey. The Battenburg slice was nice but very sticky to eat. I really liked the flower pot made from white chocolate and containing a pineapple a mango creamy mouse ......Delicious ....you must eat the flower pot too !!!!!  After eating all the cakes we both felt extremely full . We was polity asked to take our drinks to the bar as our 2 hours were up and i think they needed the table back as the restaurant was getting busy. We was shown to the bar area and just chilled there for a hour or so whilst finishing our drinks. It was wet and windy outside so we was in no rush to leave this lovely hotel.

Nearest Station  : Marble Arch   - Approx 2 minute walk.
Best bits : Sandwiches, cakes and service. Also must not forget the lady playing the harp
Worst bits : None really it was all very good
Value for money : Yes it was as could have extra sandwiches and scones and also as much tea or coffee as you want
would I go back?  :  Yes i would
